You might not be able to choose the things that happen to...

You might not be able to choose the things that happen to you–but you can choose your response and how you will feel about them. All too often we allow ourselves to be triggered by old emotional experiences, and let them run our lives. True emotional intelligence and power come only when you can manage to see the triggers for what they are, and deal with those personal issues that created them.

Until you can do that, you’re trapped in a reactive life, not the creative one we really desire.

Our minds are superb pattern recognizing tools. So much so, that...

Our minds are superb pattern recognizing tools. So much so, that they often jump to assumptions and conclusions before they have enough information to be sure those assumptions and conclusions are the correct ones. Real wizards question everything–because that’s the only way to real knowing. This clip demonstrates one way that can work, on the simplest level possible.

I leave it up to you to question some of your slightly more complex assumptions. Why do you believe that one to be true? Or another one? Did someone tell you that when you were too young to question it? Perhaps you heard it “from an authority.” Did you see it on TV, read it on the internet? Perhaps you even “saw it with your own eyes.”

One of the first lessons magic and magicians taught me was that “Seeing is not to be believed.” So look deeper. Practice really questioning everything. You might be surprised to learn how much of what you absolutely, positively knew is actually not true! And that’s a way to power. May it serve you well!

I’ve been reading Robert E. Neale’s book on the importance of...

I’ve been reading Robert E. Neale’s book on the importance of illusion. (Robert E. Neale, The Magic of Celebrating Illusion (Paperback), The Trilogy of Magic, Book 1 )
I started reading the book for the tricks–he demonstrates much of what he is discussing philosophically by teaching magic tricks–but find myself even more involved with the thinking and deeply felt connections to life and meaning that Bob expresses in the book. It boils down to this: It is important to have our illusions. They help us give our lives meaning–which is an inadequate way of saying they make us aware of what it is to be human in all its richness.

But it’s equally important to realize that all of our experiences are illusions. Our minds take the raw data of our lives and turn them into a version of reality that is, at least mostly, an illusion. We tend to give far too much weight, apply too much somber seriousness to those illusions. When we realize it is all an illusion, that can free us to play. It can help lift the seriousness of life and leave us in a place where we can truly live, unfettered and free.

So go… think the hard thoughts, embrace your illusions, fully realizing that they are illusions, and live your life as fully as you can! Want to go deeper? Click the link above and it will take you to the Theory and Art of Magic Press site where you can buy this and Bob’s other wonderful books.

Want to lead like a true wizard? Here’s a technique, first developed by Edward de Bono, which can help you practice the principle of examining every situation from multiple perspectives. The practice is a way of getting that “secret knowledge” that can give you the ability to achieve what others think is impossible.

Hypercards have a special way of warping your perceptions, even after you understand how they work. Most people aren’t aware that you can cut almost any shape into the basic hypercard format. I hope you’ll try your own. And, while you’re there, feel free to explore the whole WizardVenture.com site.

Happy holidays to all!

It’s not what you were going to do, what your plan was, that makes the difference. What did you DO? What WILL you do, now? Those are the things that will help you change tomorrow.

I know this is too true in my life. I plan and think and plan… and spend too much time waiting for others to take the actions that will change the world. This is why I’m still a “Wizard in Training,” and not a full-fledged wizard. Have you done this? I’m betting most of you reading this have, at least some of the time.

So… stop reading and get going!

This is the third of my three “Rules of Three.” Every great presentation has a beginning, middle, and end. Sounds too simplistic to be useful, right? But, in fact, there are important things that each part “does,” in terms of making the communication memorable and effective.

Beginnings set the stage, and make the promises, create the expectations for what the rest of the talk will be about. Middles fulfill those promises, hopefully with interesting stories and participatory segments that drive the point home. Endings give a sense of completion. If your presentations aren’t achieving the success you want for them, you might want to check and see if each of the three parts is living up to what it needs to achieve.

I’ve always kind of hated the idea that if a business or economy isn’t growing, it is shrinking. It seems as though there ought to be some kind of state where things just remain comfortably “as is.” Unfortunately, there really isn’t. At least, not in terms of anything that is living. So make the effort to continue to grow, to develop new skills, new relationships… to challenge yourself each day. If you’re feeling that is just too much trouble… well, have a nice funeral, because that’s where you’re headed, and faster than you might want!

Give yourself the ultimate gift during this holiday season: Giver yourself an experience you’ve never had. Make it one that makes you at least a little bit uncomfortable… but thrills you at the same time. This is the way to wisdom. A way to discovering your own full power. Do you dare it? I hope so, as it is apath to real freedom, to real power… to becoming the fully realized human you have the capacity to be.

Happy Holidays!

In today’s world, it is all too easy to fill your whole life...

In today’s world, it is all too easy to fill your whole life taking in various thoughts from others. We read, listen to podcasts, watch TV… anything but thinking for ourselves.

It will pay you, as the budding wizard, entrepreneur, changemaker… to set aside time each day to quiet your mind. Time to stop and think for yourself, without outside input. You will find it difficult to change the world until you learn to change yourself–and taking time to think, to let all that wisdom you’ve read, seen–listened to sink in, and then let it inspire your own thinking, and your actions. That’s the way to effective living. That is The Wizard’s Way.

Leonardo was an unconventional, but very wise thinker. He achieved what others of his time found to be quite incredible, on several different fronts.

I’m especially fond of the quote above… but find it more difficult to live up to than I’d like. The problem is… which one of my different “selves” must I gain dominion over? We all play different roles, and have different personas to match. The difficulty isn’t having them, but getting all the different ones to align with one another. From that, comes true power!

The Bard said it… it must be true!

But seriously…if you make your own destiny, what destiny are you busy crafting? I heard Tony Robbins once ask a crowd what life they really wanted for themselves. Many stood up and gave great, imaginative answers. After a few, he told them, “You’re all lying. The life you really want is the one you’re living right now. Why? Because that’s the one you’ve spent your whole life up to now creating!”

If you want to change your destiny–don’t wait. Do it now!

We all wear different “masks,” take on different roles,...

We all wear different “masks,” take on different roles, throughout our lives, even during the course of a single day. We’re different people at home with our family than we are driving to work, or while we’re at work. We might wear a different mask when dealing with our boss than with fellow workers. Most of these masks shift unconsciously. But we can learn to shift them on purpose, and when we take control of the masks we wear, that can be a powerful thing!

The way to learn to shift roles is through play. So take a few minutes and “put on” the mask of someone else. First, observe them closely. Then try to mimic the way they hold their face, their posture, their way of speaking. Don’t do this face to face with the person you are copying… this isn’t about making a mockery of someone. It’s about getting inside the masks they wear, and feeling what it feels like to be them. You can do this with people you see as more skillful, better adjusted, or more powerful than yourself.

Once you discover the power of conscious role-playing, of consciously putting on and taking off a particular mask, I think you’ll be amazed.

If I were to ask you, “What is your goal, your purpose? What do you want to achieve this week, this month, or during the coming year?” – would you have an answer? Are your actions taken in a creative manner – one that is directed towards specific changes you want to see in the world, or merely reactive, responding emotionally to each new challenge and development that life sends your way? This, I think, is worth considering. Perhaps as often as every day.

What do you want to accomplish today?

This is a real key to success in any business–whether you’re a solo-preneur or a mega-corporation. First know the good you want to do in the world. Know the problems you can solve, the pain points you can resolve. Once you’re clear on that, and committed to the mission, you’ll find the rest beginning to fall into place.

I’ve been wrestling with this quite a lot lately. One part of me knows with certainty that the only thing really standing in the way of massive success for my Wizard Venture is, well a hundred things, all of which boil down to…  me.

Massive action must be taken, and I’m the only one who is going to make that happen. I know it, and yet I’ve resisted doing many of the things I know I need to do. I can trace each and every obstacle on my path to something I’ve done or failed to do. But I find new ones to overcome every day… and I will see my way through. The log jam is beginning to loosen up, and soon it will break.

So… what’s holding you up? What “insurmountable obstacles” stand between you and your dreams? Once you figure out how each of them leads back to you, to something in yourself you can and must change… your log jam will vanish, too!
