I was once a guest at an Ashram where they had one mantra they used again and again. It was this: “Who am I?” And everyday you used it, you could come back with a different answer, because every day we become a new version of ourselves!
In fact, we are often “different people” within the course of an hour, a day… whatever. We are a different person when dealing with our bosses than with those working under our supervision. We’re different people with our spouses than we are with our children. Different people while reading a book than we are answering e-mail… you get the picture.
But, at the end of the day, if you think back through the events of that day, consdier: “Am I happy with who I was when…” – for all the different situations you can remember during that day. For most of us, I think, there were probably times when we were NOT the person we would most likely to be. Times when we responded in anger in a way we’re not proud of. Times when we allowed ourselves to be distracted from an important task by another less important one. Times when we gave into temptation for just one more pastry, knowing full well we weren’t going to have the extra 20 minutes in the gym to work off those extra calories. Think about all those times, and tell yourself:
Tomorrow, when X happens, I’ll remember Y… and when the end of the day comes, I’ll feel better about who I am, who I am becoming!
