Grace Hopper succeeded by being herself, following her own passions, and thinking for herself. I find it fascinating, and a bit of a condemnation of our culture, that many of the pioneers in building the art of computer coding were women… and yet so much of the coding “bro” culture of today makes things difficult for women.
This is actually one of the reasons we offer a workshop in emotional intelligence at The Wizard Venture. Too many tech startups build what ought to be brilliant teams–the best of the best–but fail to actually mold them into great teams, because they are unable to build a true sense of teamwork, and because too many brilliant technicians are emotional morons. But there is hope, because emotional intelligence can be learned, and those who put in the time and effort to learn it succeed at a much higher level in all areas of their lives than those who don’t.
