Emotion is a funny thing. We tend to think emotions are...

Emotion is a funny thing. We tend to think emotions are reactions to things that happen to us, and often they are just that. Sometimes they’re more a reaction to our body chemistry–what we’ve eaten, how long we’ve slept, or how much exercise we’ve had. Whatever causes an emotion, we don’t really feel it until we express it.

Actors know, though, that if you express a particular emotion, if you do it physically and through your voice, you will actually begin to feel that emotion. What’s so special about that, you may ask? Simply the fact that it gives us some control over our emotional states. Learning to take control of your own emotions can be extremely useful when you want to persuade others to do something, when you want to change the mood of a group, and in many other situations we all encounter.

So, next time you’re having some kind of emotional moment–say you’re triggered into anger by someone else’s actions–take a moment and express an emotion contrary to the one you’re feeling. Laugh at yourself, or take a deep breath and smile… make yourself express joy, or sympathy instead of the anger… and before you know it, you’ll be in control!
