In this first Wizard Minute of 2021, I show you how Leonardo da Vinci used two of our main “Wizard Principles” to create the most famous smile in history…that of the Monda Lisa.
First, there is the insistence on learning “first hand.” In this case, that meant Leonardo refused to accept what others told him about the anatomy of the human face. Instead, undertook systematic and expert disection of cadavers in order to learn about all the muscles and nerves which control the expressions of the human face. He wanted to know for certain, for himself, just how our anatomy functions.
The second major principle at play here is the insistence that to really know something, you must examine it from many angles. Leonardo drew faces and lips from the front, back, above, below…even inside out, in order to truly understand how different expressions were achieved.
This is, of course, an oversimplification of these principles, and of Leonardo’s process for creating the Mona Lisa’s smile. Knowledge of light, paint, emotion–and so much more–went into that painting. Did you know he worked on it for almost 15 years after the initial sitting? Which is all to say, if you are willing to apply these principles to what you do–the willingness to take extreme measures, to experience and think what others think to be “unthinkable,” and to examine every untertaking from many different perspectives–you, too, may achieve the remarkable!
We offer talks and workshops teaching these “Wizard Principles,” currently on the subjects of Powerful Presentations, Innovation on Demand, and Culture Hacking for Business Leaders right now. Get in touch to learn more. Help us make 2021 the “Year of the Wizard!”
