Why would Feynman be so insistent that he “calculate everything for himself?” Why did Steve Jobs insist that focus groups weren’t helpful in developing new products? Why should you not accept the given knowledge of experts, but go to the trouble to think things through for yourself?
I expect there are many reasons, but the first one, for me, is that the “given knowledge” is often wrong. It is often from another time, delivered based on evidence that is incomplete, or simply wrong based on more recent evidence and understanding. If you want the power to change the world, you’ll need real facts and real understandings of the way the world works. So follow our “Wizard’s Motto,” and get into the habit of questioning everything!
