This a big one. As Henry Ford and others have observed, “the one who says they can, and the one who says they can’t – will both be right.” Our beliefs about what is possible – for us, and in the world – have more control over our experience of reality than we imagine.
There’s a well-known story about Steve Jobs – I think it was during the development of the iPod. He was finishing up a meeting with designers and engineers in which they had all come to agreement on the techinical specifications for that first iPod. Jobs wanted to know, “How soon can you get me a prototype?” The group put they heads together and calculated carefully. So many days to complete the wireframes, design the circuit boards, print things out, test them, etc. “We think, if everything goes without a htich, that we can get you something in six weeks”
“Okay, said Jobs. I need it on my desk in 6 days. Now get out of here and get to work.”
Six days rolled around, and sure enough, the group delivered their prototype! Jobs had reset expectations, and suddenly “the impossible” had become possible!
The lesson here: Stop setting your own expectations for yourself so low!
