This is an idea that appears in many different philosophies, and...

This is an idea that appears in many different philosophies, and it’s a powerful way of thinking for those of us who would create change. Why? Because it means that it may be possible to instigate change in one particular area by changing something in a completely different area.

A prime example of this is the Hermeticist’s dictum “As Above, So Below.” This can be interpreted in different ways, but one common one is that to change the world, simply change yourself. Because you are a part of the larger world, that world will change when you do.

I remember reading something by Buckminster Fuller many years ago, that every object created alters the entire universe. His reasoning, if I create a new cube, that cube has an inside and an outside. I can choose to see it as a discreet object, or as a universe with a hole at its center which is defined by that object.

Yet another is to think of our reality as a net where everything is connected to everything else… and if you pluck a strand of the net in one place, it will be reflected somewhere else, possibly in an area that seems to be unrelated. This is the “Butterfly Effect” first spoken of by Conrad Lorenz, where the flapping of a butterfly’s wings in one part of the globe might trigger a cyclone in another. The trick there, of course, is to know where and when your action might resonate.

So: I’m curious… do you have examples of this phenomenon within your experience? I’d love to hear about them!
