Going into it deeply enough–that’s the key! In today’s “short attention span theater,” it grows harder and harder for us to focus on any one thing long enough to really think about it deeply. As a result, we’re in danger of becoming a society ruled by propagandistic slogans and advertising for things which have been made to sound good on the surface, but which, if we take a few moments to think just a bit more deeply, go against the very core of our beings.
This is not a simple issue, and applies to each of us, no matter what those core beliefs might be. “That sounds good,” or “looks fine to me,” should never be the basis on which we make major life decisions. But how do you find the time, the focus, to really think for yourself? We all believe we think for ourselves, but in fact, I fear most of us actually think the thoughts of others. “Sounds fine to me.”
The truth is, we each need to make time to think. If you fill all your time with social media, mass media (how many hours of TV did you watch yesterday?), or other forms of “busyness,” you’ll never manage the time to actually think your own thoughts. But if you consciously set aside time for thinking, perhaps for meditation, you’ll quickly find that time to be far more valuable than all the busyness or entertainment time you’ve been filling your days–and your mind– with. You have to make the conscious choice to do this, though. There’s a whole world out there clamoring for your attention, and finding new ways to get it. Don’t let them win!
